Chicago Cubs Pitcher Cole Hamels Heading to Injured List, Maddon Says

Hamels left Friday's game against the Reds after throwing warm-up pitches in the second inning

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon said that starting pitcher Cole Hamels suffered a strained left oblique muscle during his start on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds, and confirmed the hurler is heading to the injured list.

Hamels, who gave up one run in the first inning of the game, came out to warm up for the second inning, but after throwing a few pitches he immediately walked off the mound and into the Cubs' dugout.

The hurler will undergo an MRI on Saturday, Maddon told reporters in the clubhouse, and from there a determination will be made on how long he could be on the shelf.

The Cubs are already dealing with another injury on their pitching staff, as Kyle Hendricks remains on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
