Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has three Stanley Cup titles and two Olympic gold medals, but that abundance of hardware wasn’t enough to secure him a prestigious honor on Thursday.
Instead, that honor, the captaincy for Team Canada in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, went to Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The announcement comes less than a month before the tournament begins in Toronto, with the first game scheduled to take place on Sept. 17 at Air Canada Centre.
Although Toews will not have the “C” on his jersey for the event, which will involve eight countries, he was named as an alternate captain for the Canadian squad. Joining Toews in that capacity will be defenseman Shea Weber, who was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in a blockbuster swap earlier this offseason.
Toews will be joined by numerous Blackhawks in the tournament, including Canadian teammate Corey Crawford, Team USA’s Patrick Kane, and Sweden’s Niklas Hjalmarsson and Marcus Kruger.
