Chicago police responded to a report of a bomb threat at a Jewish school on Chicago's North Side Tuesday morning.
Police said just after 9 a.m. a threat was reported at the Chicago Jewish Day School in the 5900 block of Sheridan Road in the city's Edgewater Beach neighborhood.
Police said it appeared someone called the school and said there was a bomb at that location.
A school official said the building was evacuated and students were safe following the threat. Roads were being blocked off in the area.
Just after 11 a.m., a police source confirmed bomb-sniffing dogs had swept the school and temple and the building was deemed safe. Students were taken back to the school soon after.
The bomb threat was among several targeted at Jewish facilities across the country Tuesday, with community centers in New York, Florida and Milwaukee ordering brief evacuations and the Anti-Defamation League reporting several of its offices had received threats.
“The latest instance of anti-Semitic ‘telephone terrorism’ was committed this morning, targeting a Jewish day school not too far from my district office,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky said in a statement Tuesday. “I am monitoring the situation closely and offer my full support to the community during this troubling time. I will support law enforcement in their investigation, and hope that justice will be brought swiftly to the perpetrator of this heinous act. Anti-Semitism, in all of its ugly forms, is unacceptable and has no place in our country today.”
It's the latest in a string of threats that has prompted evacuations of dozens of facilities in 30 states, including Illinois, in recent months. One hundred bomb threats have been made against Jewish community centers and Jewish day schools since the beginning of the year.
