Cubs Hope Kyle Schwarber Could Return for World Series

The Chicago Cubs bested the Los Angeles Dodgers to win their first trip to the World Series since 1945 on Saturday, but fans should be very interested in a high-profile prospect who suited up in a game 1800 miles away from the Friendly Confines.

That player is Kyle Schwarber, who suffered a torn ACL in his left knee very early in the regular season. At the time it was assumed that Schwarber was going to be done for the year, but a new development could put that assumption in doubt. [[397855571, C]]

That's because the Cubs activated Schwarber from the 60-day disabled list so he could be added to the taxi squad for the Mesa Solar Sox, the Cubs' Arizona Fall League affiliate in the Phoenix-area. Schwarber played in a game for the Solar Sox on Saturday night, and according to a report from Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic Chicago, the Cubs made this move to see if it's possible if Schwarber could be available as a designated hitter in the World Series.

Obviously Schwarber hadn't played in an actual game since his April injury, but he has been cleared to hit by team doctors, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, and he has been going through vigorous workouts both in Chicago and in Arizona.

Being added to the AFL taxi squad is the next logical step in his recovery, and if he shows that he's healthy enough, there's at least a chance that he could be with the Cubs next week if they can knock off the Dodgers and advance to the World Series.
