Jose Abreu Makes History for the White Sox

It’s been a rough season on the diamond for the Chicago White Sox, but one of their bright spots on the roster made a remarkable bit of baseball history on Saturday night.

That player is Jose Abreu, who has been one of the best players in the game since he came into the league in 2014. A three-hit outing against the Cleveland Indians gave him 179 hits on the season and cemented his place among an elite triumvirate of players.

According to Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago, Abreu is now one of only three players in baseball history to hit at least 25 home runs and rack up at least 175 hits in each of his first three seasons in the majors. In accomplishing that feat, Abreu joins Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and Los Angeles Angels star Albert Pujols in the exclusive club.

In 152 games so far this season, Abreu has 25 home runs and 97 RBI for the White Sox, who signed him as an international free agent before the 2014 season. He has hit a career high in hits this season, and he’s 10 RBI away from setting a career high in that category as well.

Unfortunately for Abreu, the White Sox are in the midst of a down season that will see them miss the postseason for the eighth consecutive season, but at least their star slugger is still having a banner year.
