Chicago-area mail carriers will not deliver mail for the second straight day on Thursday, the service announced Wednesday.
According to a press release, the decision was made "to ensure the safety and well-being of employees."
"We apologize for any inconvenience this weather-related service disruption has caused," District Manager Randy Stines said. "The safety and well-being of our employees is always of paramount concern to the Postal Service."
While post offices will be open to provide retail services, mail carriers will not be making deliveries in the record-breaking cold.
After a frigid day Wednesday, temperatures will drop to near record lows in the overnight hours. High temperatures on Thursday are expected to top out around zero degrees.

In addition to Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, mail delivery has been suspended in Minnesota, Iowa, western Wisconsin and western Illinois because of Winter Storm Jayden.
