Parents Killed, Kids Among 7 Hurt After Street Racers Crash Into Van: Police

A mother and father were killed and their children were among seven people injured after two vehicles crashed into their van while street racing in a southern Chicago suburb, police said Friday.

The three cars collided around 7:45 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of 137th Street and Central Park Avenue. Authorities alleged in a news conference Friday that two of the vehicles were street racing at the time of the crash.

Robbins Police said a mother and father were killed in the crash and their three children -- ages 4, 7 and 8 --were among those injured. The parents were identified as Chires Davis, 43, and Less Jones, 59.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the deaths Friday.

"They're doing everything that they're supposed to do," said Chief of Police Mitchell Davis. "They got themselves buckled in, they got their kids buckled in, they're going down the street not doing anything wrong. Then, out of the blue, their lives are just devastated and we've got three orphans now."

Four other people were injured in the crash but their conditions weren't immediately known.

Witnesses reported seeing a Nissan Altima and a Buick racing northbound on Central Park before running a stop sign at 137th Street and crashing into the van.

Officials had earlier said that four children were hurt in the crash, but said Friday the injured included six adults and three children.

Charges were pending against both drivers, police said.
